The challenge

The customer portal polled a reporting database every minute. During peak season the database saturated, pages took seconds to load and customers flooded the call centre asking where their parcels were.

Our solution

Event-driven tracking

Scan and GPS events flow through a distributed queue into a read-optimised MongoDB projection, pushed to browsers over WebSockets.

  • Redis pub/sub fan-out to thousands of concurrent viewers.
  • Load tests at 10× peak volume before go-live.
  • Graceful degradation to polling when sockets are unavailable.

Results

  • Event throughput increased from 400 to 6,500 events per second.
  • p95 page latency fell from 2.8 s to 310 ms.
  • “Where is my parcel” calls dropped by 38%.
